The first time you buy a box of cigars you need a humidor.
A cigar humidor keeps your cigar collection from drying out. Without a place to store or protect your collection all of your cigars will quickly become unsmokable.
Alternatives to a humidor such as putting the cigars in the freezing or in a ziplock bag is undesirable. These are all harsh environments which have ruined many fine cigars.
The first time I bought cigars I didn't get a humidor. I smoked the cigars shortly after buying them and they were fine. The next time I ordered cigars I got a humidor with them.
The truth is you don't have to spend a lot of money on a cigar humidor. Perhaps you've seen some very expensive cigar humidors in a catalog. $1000, $2000, maybe even $6000 or more. The good news is you don't need to spend $1000 on a cigar humidor.
I've been using a cheap cigar humidor that only cost me $20. I don't expect it to be around in 15 years -- but for now it works fine.
The only problem with my little cigar humidor is its size. On more than one occasion I've had to leave cigars outside of the humidor because it was packed to the top.
A few more details about cigar humidors
Keep your flavored cigars seperate from the rest of your collection. If you have any acid cigars or other infused or flavored cigars don't put them in your main cigar humidor.
Watch your hydrometer to make sure the humidity doesn't drop too low or clime too high in your cigar humidor. Preferably it should be at somewhere between 61 and 70. Too low and they will dry out too high and they will get moldy & have a very uneven burn.
One of my favorite online cigar stores, Cigar.com carries a good selection of high quality humidors at modest prices.
